Bauer, runner-up in the 2008 Melbourne Cup, is set to make a belated seasonal debut at Haydock on Saturday.

Trainer Luca Cumani is looking at the Watch Races Live at racinguk.com Handicap over an extended mile-and-a-quarter for the eight-year-old grey.

The Newmarket trainer feels the Halling gelding will benefit greatly from his first run since September.

Bauer has had just two runs since going down by only a nose to Viewed in the Melbourne Cup.

"Bauer is going to run in a mile-and-a-quarter handicap at Haydock on the 6th," said Cumani.

"He always needs his first run, so I wouldn't expect too much from him this time."

Bauer's career has stalled because of injury since his agonising Melbourne Cup defeat with Sydney jockey Corey Brown on board.

He suffered a tendon injury in 2009 and at one stage retirement was likely for the stayer.

A return trip to Australia for the 2010 Melbourne Cup was aborted after Bauer finished unplaced in two United Kingdom runs during September last year.

Bauer, who won the Geelong Cup in 2008, is part-owned by high-profile Australian racing identities Simon O'Donnell and Terry Henderson who bought a half share in the horse through their bloodstock company OTI Racing.
