Trevor Bailey continued his luck with former Peter Moody-trained gallopers when Barlinnie scored a heart-stopping victory in the Listed Doomben Stakes at Doomben.

Ridden by Jason Holder and having his second run this campaign, Barlinnie flashed home to edge out Forestreno by a half neck in the 1350-metre feature with veteran campaigner Mitanni, a further half length away third.

Barlinnie, who was runner-up to The Fuzz in the Group Two Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington in March, went into the race with an unblemished second-up record of three wins.

The five-year-old cost his new owners in the high six-figures after winning six of his 12 starts for Moody.

"A contact of mine in Sydney first told me he was for sale so I got him vetted and paid a high six figure sum for him," said syndicate manager Grant Morgan.

"At the time the view was the Queensland races were weak around this time of the year and we hoped to pick up one or two."

The son of St. Petersburg was beaten just over two lengths in his Queensland debut in the Group Three George Moore Stakes (1200m) at Doomben a fortnight ago and will now be aimed at the Listed Bernborough Handicap (1615m) at Doomben in a fortnight.

Bailey will then rest Barlinnie to prepare for the Brisbane winter carnival where his main mission will be the Group Two Hollindale Cup (1800m) at the Gold Coast and Group One Doomben Cup (2020m) next May.

"He ran up to what I expected and this win will top him right off for the Bernborough," Bailey said.

"I've had a lot of luck with a few of Peter's (Moody) horses.

"I got Perfect Feeling from him and Fasliyev Dancer which I've won three from four with."

Trainer Ritchie Stephenson predicted a feature race win was well within scope for Toowoomba speedster Azzaland following the gelding's explosive win in the Panasonic and Panasales Handicap (1010m).

Azzaland made it eight wins from 10 starts when he overcame being trapped four wide from a wide barrier for a commanding 1-1/4 length win over Nessuno.

Stephenson is eyeing the $100,000 Bat Out Of Hell Handicap (900m) at the Gold Coast on January 3 as the immediate target for the four-year-old but bigger things could be in store during next year's Brisbane winter carnival.

"I didn't think he could win when he I saw what barrier he got on Thursday," Stephenson said.

"Even when he got trapped four wide in the early stages today I was very worried.

"But not many horses like him come around often and he could win anything.

"I've been training for 29 years and have had some good horses but he's the fastest horse I've ever had."

"He's come a long way from winning his maiden at Toowoomba in December last year."
