Tye Angland repaid the faith Black Piranha's connections bestowed in him with a brilliant ride to win the $100,000 Goldmarket Handicap but they are already chasing a replacement for next week's Magic Millions Cup.

Winning trainer Con Karakatsanis insisted Angland ride Black Piranha in Thursday's Goldmarket (1300m) despite knowing he could not stick with the horse in next week's million dollar feature due to a careless riding suspension.

"Tye knows the horse so well and although it would have been good to have the same jockey ride him today and next week I wanted to stick with Tye," Karakatsanis said.

Having his first ride on the tricky Gold Coast circuit, Angland allowed Black Piranha ($8.50) to drift back early and the gelding unleashed a powerful sprint in the straight for an emphatic length win.

Local galloper Woody N Buzz ($18) finished second after he looked the winner halfway up the straight and Forestreno ($16) ran his usual honest race to finish a long neck away in third.

Albert The Fat drifted from $2.50 to start the $2.80 favourite but was never in the hunt after he missed the start and raced at the rear of the field and plodded in the straight to finish seventh, three lengths behind the winner.

Karakatsanis would not say who he would like to ride Black Piranha in the Magic Millions Cup but he shouldn't have any trouble finding a suitable replacement.

Angland was a picture of mixed emotions after the win but he was full of appreciation to Karakatsanis and the big group of connections.

"They stuck with me when they knew I couldn't ride him next week and I'm very grateful for that," Angland said.

"I would love to ride him next week but I can't lament on that. I'm suspended and there is nothing I can do about that now."

Earlier, Gold Coast gelding Little Mel stormed into Magic Millions Trophy calculations with a dominant win in the $25,000 Class 3 Handicap (1200m).

Confidently ridden by Terry Treichel, Little Mel ($4.20 fav) stormed home from well back to score an easy 1-1/4 length victory in a performance that left winning trainer Trevor Bailey brimming with confidence.

Beaudesert gelding Cuban Dancer ($9) tried hard to finish second but was no match for the winner and outsider Liberica ($41) ran an honest race to finish a short neck third.

Bailey put blinkers back on Little Mel after he removed them when the horse failed behind Zahas Pride over a mile at his last start and the astute trainer said the horse would definitely wear the hood in the Trophy (1400m).

"The blinkers made all the difference. He over-raced without them last start but he switches off when they're on," Bailey said.

"And he has to be ridden quietly. Letting him relax early and finish off is the only way to ride him."

Bailey believes the Magic Millions Trophy line-up isn't as strong as previous years and he said Little Mel's home track advantage would be a huge bonus in the million dollar event.

"He's got next week to freshen up and he goes really well around this track which will be a big thing in his favour," Bailey said.

"The 1400 metres will be perfect for him and I'm confident he'll run a very good race."
