Steve Richards believes Almindoro can set himself up to chase a lucrative spring target if he races to expectations at Sandown.

The Redoute's Choice four-year-old showed plenty of promise last season but the Flemington trainer said Almindoro developed a habit of racing too fiercely.

Almindoro goes second-up into Wednesday's Le Pine Funerals Handicap (1600m) after running on from last to finish fourth to Tahitian Black over 1209m at Seymour when resuming on September 1.

He is equal topweight with Another Prelate in the rating 72 event in which he will jump from the outside barrier (16).

"We're still learning about him," Richards said.

"He did a bit wrong during the autumn. He wanted to pull and raced upside down.

"So I wanted to start all over with him this preparation and hopefully get him to settle a little bit better in his races rather than just doing things wrong."

Top heavyweight rider Steve Arnold, who rode Almindoro first-up, retains the mount.

"Steve suits the horse nicely and he will give me a good guide on how he's going," Richards said.

"I'm looking for him to take him through his grades and to try to win a nice race with him over the carnival."

Last spring Almindoro was runner-up to Eclair Surprise at Listed level at Flemington over 1800m before running second to Retrieve in the Group Three Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield.

He was spelled after finishing sixth to Lion Tamer in the Group One Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington.

In the autumn he won a maiden race second-up at Moonee Valley before racing keenly in front when third to Folding Gear in the Group Two Autumn Classic (1800m) at Caulfield.

Richards put him out after he pulled hard and weakened to run sixth behind Domesky in the Group Two Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley.

Meanwhile Linda Meech has been the beneficiary of a careless riding suspension and subsequent failed appeal by Luke Nolen in picking up the ride on the highly-promising Moment Of Change in the Hyland Race Colours Handicap (1300m).

Meech rode the Peter Moody-trained three-year-old to a 10-length victory in a Murtoa maiden on August 27 at his race debut.

That effort brought the Barely A Moment gelding into calculations for the $1 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 8.

Moment Of Change is currently fourth pick in Guineas betting at $9.

Among Wednesday's opposition is another Guineas contender, the Byron Cozamanis-trained Vatican, who ran third to Golden Archer in the Group Three McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield at his latest appearance.

Collar, Almahaab and Meethaq are also still in the Caulfield Guineas, while Holdontoyahorses remains in the Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 12.
