Jockey Brad Pengelly gave Queensland's rising star Albert The Fat the thumbs up for a Sydney spring campaign following the sprinter's rousing victory at Doomben.

Albert The Fat was ridden coolly in the early stages by Pengelly to overcome his awkward barrier before accelerating in the straight to down Forestreno by 2-3/4 lengths in Saturday's Clean Domain Quality (1200m).

Pengelly only got the nod to ride the five-year-old on trainer Eden Petrie's casting vote after connections were deadlocked choosing between the former Sydney-based rider and last-start winning jockey Damian Browne.

"He's definitely up to going to Sydney," Pengelly said.

"He's racing on raw ability at the moment and he's maturing all the time.

"He put the issue beyond doubt at the 200 metres but a lot of the credit goes to Eden.

"Eden was under a lot of pressure to get him ready for last month's Ramornie but a few things went wrong."

Petrie immediately confirmed Pengelly would ride Albert The Fat when he heads interstate for the Listed Show County Handicap (1200m) at Randwick on August 22 and Group Two Theo Marks Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on September 12.

Plans beyond those two races are undecided but Petrie, who has only been training since October, hasn't ruled out a Melbourne campaign.

Albert The Fat's win took his record to nine wins from 15 starts and the superstitious Petrie has no plans to change his routine interstate.

"I'll stable him at Scone with Paul Messara as he likes the country environment," said Petrie who trains at Wadham Park in the Gold Coast hinterland.

Albert The Fat made a brilliant comeback winning for Browne over 1200 metres at Eagle Farm two weeks ago and Petrie knew there was a lot of room for improvement.

"I knew he had to improve but I wanted him to have something up his sleeve after this run before he goes away," he said.

Earlier, promising grey mare Malandrina ensured the horses' birthday was also a cause for celebrations for trainer Brian Smith.

Smith, who shares the same birthday as the horses, turned 68 on Saturday and was in a partying mood after Malandrina scored a 1-1/4 length win in the Clean Domain Plate (2200m).

"I'm 68 today but I'm not as grey as the winner," Smith said.

"She showed a lot of promise last year and ran fourth to Hey Elvis who went on to run second in the Villiers.

"She's still learning but she's improving all the time.

"I think she'll make a good stayer next campaign over 2400 metres but for the time being she'll just go through her classes."
