Rookie trainer Eden Petrie plans to give promising sprinter Albert The Fat the chance of spring glory in Sydney and Melbourne following his comeback victory at Eagle Farm.

Albert The Fat, having his first start since failing in the Magic Millions Cup (1400m) at the Gold Coast in January, strolled to a 1-1/4 length win over Sommersea Drive in Saturday's Tattersall's Arcade Handicap (1200m).

The rising five-year-old missed the Brisbane winter carnival with a minor leg injury he suffered in a paddock accident during a spell following his ninth to Masai Pride in the Magic Millions Cup.

Petrie has only been training since October but has had many years experience working with Gold Coast trainer John Wallace before a stint as foreman for Dale Sutton when he trained at Wadham Park in the Gold Coast hinterland.

Petrie plans to give Albert The Fat, who has now won eight of his 14 starts, his next outing in Brisbane in a fortnight before heading to Sydney for the spring.

"I'll run him in a quality race here in two weeks and if he goes well I'll take him to Sydney and then hopefully to Melbourne," Petrie said.

"He was only 85 per cent fit today as I only gave him one barrier trial to fit him for this.

"He's a big, gross horse and he'll improve a lot from this run."

Petrie is not looking too far afield in the spring with Albert The Fat but his first Sydney start will likely be in the Listed Show County Quality (1200m) at Randwick on August 22.

"I'm not sure after that but there's a chance he might run in the Theo Marks and if he goes well in those two races I might head off to Melbourne," he said.

The Group Two Theo Marks (1400m) is at Rosehill on September 12.

Petrie was looking to aim Albert The Fat at the $1 million Group One Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm last month before he was hurt.

"I thought I was going to be a genius with him a week before for the Magic Millions Cup when the track looked like being heavy but things didn't pan out that way," he said.

"He had a hard run in the Doomben Stakes (in December) and I think that took a lot out of him."
