Queensland trainer Robert Heathcote has confirmed yesterday’s Listed Centenary Mercedes Benz Classic (1600m) winner Fire Up Fifi will target the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) during the Spring Racing Carnival, reports Racing Victoria.

While his defending David Jones Toorak Handicap (1600m) winner Solzhenitsyn and top line sprinter Buffering are already pencilled in to return to Melbourne, Heathcote also nominated the ultra-consistent mare for feature races during the spring following her impressive Eagle Farm success.

It was the second Stakes victory of the Brisbane Winter Carnival for the daughter of Bradbury’s Luck, who also claimed the Listed Spear Chief Handicap (1500m) at Eagle Farm on 1 June, and took her career tally to 11 wins from 29 starts.

While the Group 1 mile for mares will be her ultimate goal, Heathcote nominated the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on 5 October and the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on 19 October as possible lead-up options for Fire Up Fifi.

“She has been a super mare all the way through the (Queensland) Carnival,” Heathcote said.

“She now deserves the right for a bit of a break in the paddock and then a trip to Melbourne for the spring.

“There’s a nice race at Rosehill on the way down in mid-September called the Sheraco Stakes (G3, 14 September) and that’s a mares 1200m race.

“Then the Blazer Stakes at Flemington and then there’s a nice 1400m mares race at Caulfield that leads into the Myer Classic on the 2nd of November.”

While adept on all surfaces, Fire Up Fifi ($3.70) relished the Heavy 8 conditions at Eagle Farm to score narrowly from last-start Listed Eye Liner Stakes winner Conservatorium ($4.60), with 2012 Myer Classic runner-up Soft Sand (7th) also in her wake.

Adding to his classy trio, Heathcote hinted that Stakes performed Fillydelphia could target a race in Melbourne during the spring after pleasing in her recovery from a bizarre paddock incident.

“Pretty much Fire Up Fifi and Solzhenitsyn as well as Buffering and I’ve got a mare that we never saw during this year’s Winter Carnival in Fillydelphia,” Heathcote said.

“She had a freakish incident with an eye, she was picking some grass and stabbed herself in the eye, so I may find a race for her down there.”
