Will we be seeing Mosheen in the spring? Well, there's a cloud over the mare right now. Latest news says she has undergone surgery for an entrapped epiglottis. What's that? It's apparently a condition in which the epiglottis is trapped on the floor of the pharynx (windpipe) causing an obstruction to normal breathing, particularly during a race. Surgeon Tom Russell reports that all went well with the procedure and Mosheen is now up and back in her box. But what does it mean as far as her racing career is concerned? Trainer Robert Smerdon doesn't seem too concerned. He says: 'At this stage she's due to resume in two weeks time. It's too early to make any firm decision but we have the option of changing a couple of her early runs around or it might just be that she goes into her first run or two a little less wound up.' Smerdon seems confident Mosheen's Cox Plate campaign will be OK.

There's better news about another top mare, More Joyous. She notched a barrier trial win over 1050m at Randwick on Monday. Gai Waterhouse's stable rep Mark Newnham says: 'She did what we thought she would do...She's lost nothing from the autum.'
