ROYAL RANDWICK'S ageing QE2 grandstand will have the front part of its roof removed in preparation for next month's 'Super Saturday' meeting, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
It says: The Epsom Handicap feature, which also includes The Metropolitan, Flight Stakes and Spring Champion, will be run at Randwick despite the QE11 being stricken with concrete cancer. Three roof beams, which have been cleared of the cancer, contain steel rods that were found to have snapped due to rust and corner-cutting when the QE2 was completed in 1969.
The Australian Turf Club confirmed next Saturday's George Main Stakes would be moved from Randwick to Rosehill and the distance reduced from 1600 metres to 1500m. ATC chief executive Darren Pearce said the shift and that of last Saturday's Chelmsford Stakes from Randwick to Warwick Farm would cost the club a substantial six-figure sum.
