JOCKEY Brett Prebble, who came from Hong Kong to win yesterday's Golden Slipper Stakes on Crystal Lily at Rosehill, was later fined $5000 and suspended until April 25 for careless riding on the Victorian filly, reports the Sunday Age.

It says: Prebble told stewards he did all he could to keep his mount on a straight course in the closing stages and that he had to fight to keep her from going through the outside rail.

But, chief steward Ray Murrihy said he believed that Prebble had a duty of care to sixth placegetter Solar Charged, who received interference when Crystal Lily dived out abruptly over the final 150 metres.

Hugh Bowman, who rode Solar Charged, said in evidence that his mount ''may have finished a place instead of running sixth''.

Solar Charged's trainer, John O'Shea, was more critical, however, pointing out the huge difference in prizemoney and residual value between finishing sixth and second.

Prebble said: ''What was I to do? It was a Golden Slipper and I was doing my best to win it and at the same time looking after my fellow jockeys.''

Murrihy told Prebble he could have stopped riding. He said that while Prebble was trying to stop Crystal Lily from running off the track for his own preservation, he didn't show the same thought for Bowman.

On leaving the stewards' room, Prebble was asked: ''How do you feel about that?''

The Hong Kong-based jockey replied: ''I've now lost the jockeys' premiership in Hong Kong, but at least I've won a Golden Slipper.''
