IN RECENT years Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Mike Moroney has been a major player at the Brisbane winter carnival, and as the northern carnival draws to a close with tomorrow's Sunshine Coast meeting, Moroney will saddle up three runners in the Caloundra Cup and one in the Guineas, reports The Age/SMH.

The report adds: ''We have been a little quieter up here this year but Marheta did win the Doomben Roses and run second in the Queensland Oaks,'' the Flemington-based Moroney said yesterday.

''The stable has won $3.3 million in prizemoney and outside of Victoria we are closing in on $1 million. And we've only had the three winners [on the road] ... Divine Rebel ran second in the Sydney Cup, Monaco Consul ran third in the AJC Derby and third in the Queen Elizabeth.

''Remember, Monaco [Consul] won the Spring Champion [Stakes] at Randwick in the spring and old Mr Baritone has added just on $100,000 to his account.''

Heading the Moroney trio in the Caloundra Cup is Tinseltown, with Damien Oliver on board. The champion hoop heads to England next week to ride the David Hayes-trained Nicconi in the group 1 July Cup at Newmarket.

''If all three brought their best form to the track on Saturday, Tinseltown is the one to beat,'' Moroney said.

''Both Prix Du Sang and Calatrava ran very good races last start and are on the improve. There is not much between them, but Tinseltown has won group 3 races before and has always been competitive when right. He was unlucky in an Auckland Cup and was narrowly beaten in a Brisbane Cup.''
