The Mike Moroney-trained Shenzhou Steeds made light work of his 58kg impost with an exhilarating victory in Saturday's Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) at the Sunshine Coast.
Jockey Eddie Wilkinson teamed up with Moroney and Shenzhou Steeds to win the Listed Ipswich Cup a fortnight back although that victory gave little clue to the thoroughly dominant performance at Caloundra as the son of Ishiguru won by an ever widening seven lengths.
"When it kept raining, I was starting to really worry and with the raised weights and his first go at a mile and a half, I thought he had a lot against him," Moroney told Sky Racing World. He came here in great order but I was still concerned about how he would handle this track. Eddie knows his tracks. He is good and fit. He has always been a good rider and a great team player."
A full brother to talented Hong Kong galloper Hot Shot and a half brother to the stakes-placed Sun Valley (Van Nistelrooy), Shenzhou Steeds takes his overall record to seven wins and one second from 15 starts for earnings of $397,574.
All three of his stakes wins have come in the Sunshine State. He opened his stakes account on the same program last year in the Listed Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m).
After the Ipswich Cup Moroney's intension was to give Shenzhou Steeds his final start of the season in the Grafton Cup and miss the Melbourne spring but the ease of the victory has the New Zealand born trainer reconsidering.
"The way he won that race I haven't completely closed the door on the spring with him. Moroney added. It's certainly given me a bit to think about so I'll mull it over in the next few days before I make a final decision."
Passed in short of his $50,000 reserve at the 2009 Karaka select Yearling sale, Shenzhou Steeds was purchased privately after winning a maiden in New Zealand
He is the third foal of the 5-time winner Sun City (Spectacular Love) a half-sister to AJC Sires' Produce Stakes (G1) winner Reganza (Vice Regal) the dam of VRC Oaks (G1) winner Kensington Palace (Kingston Rule).
