Leon Corstens is likely to wait another week before deciding on a first-up assignment for Thousand Guineas winner Commanding Jewel, reports Racing Victoria. The star four-year-old, a half-sister to Atlantic Jewel, made a special guest appearance at Moonee Valley, where she had a solid hit-out between races. Working home over 600m, she covered the last 400m in 22.98secs, which included an 11.53-second final furlong.

Corstens was thrilled with the work, with came under Damien Oliver, but the Romsey trainer said he was not yet committed in the race touted as her likely first-up option, the $150,000 Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on 17 August.

“She looks enormous and we’re really pleased with her,” Corstens said. “I thought she worked terrific and ‘Ollie’ seemed very pleased with her, so that’s great.

“We were going to head for the Cockram, but I think it might be coming up a fraction quick so we’ll just wait and see.

“I went around after the gallop and had a look at her and I thought she pulled up remarkably well. I was very, very pleased with her.

“I’d like to get another couple of good gallops into her, so we’ll just see what happens.”

Commanding Jewel has not started since her dominant victory in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas and Corstens said the dream is to get the daughter of Commands to the $3 million Sportingbet Cox Plate, at the scene of today’s gallop, on 26 October.

“She’s showed a lot of brilliance at the moment and hopefully she’s going to get the mile-and-a-quarter,” he said.

“It’s a long way down the track but we’re hoping we can get there. We’ve nominated her for it.”

Corstens’ confidence at getting Commanding Jewel to run out a strong 2040m would never have been as strong as now after producing Alpha Proxima to win the $100,000 Boscastle Handicap (1600m) at Moonee Valley.

It was the eight-year-old’s first run beyond 1420m, but an outstanding on-pace Dwayne Dunn ride carried the $0 chance to a dominant 2-3/4-length win.

“I was very cautious (about him running 600m), but it just goes to show what can happen when you get your own way in front,” Corstens said. “If he couldn’t run a mile here, he never would.

“He’s been a blood old marvel this horse. He’s a champion to us. He’s a real good money-spinner.”
