Jake Noonan struck an immediate blow after returning from a late-winter let-up when he partnered Torahka to victory in a heat of the National Patient Transport Rising Stars today at Werribee.

Noonan combined with his trainer/father Tony to score at his first ride since returning from a week-long spell in Bali.

Noonan, who also recently travelled to Macau to represent Australia in the Asian Young Guns, drove the $6.50 chance to a short-half-head win in the 1610m event for 0-62 performers.

That earned him maximum points in the series that allocates points 12-6-4-2-1 to the first five home in selected events and equal top spot on the leaderboard with opening heat winner Damian Lane.

Damien Thornton, who finished fourth in Heat 1, sits just behind the two leaders on eight points after his narrow second placing at Werribee aboard Lady Jodalyna.

Defending champion Ben Knobel heads the others to collect points at Werribee, securing four points for his third placing aboard Lakers Bay, while 2010/11 champion Adam McCabe (two) and star Sydney apprentice Chad Schofield (one) were the others to get on the board.

The next heat of the Rising Stars will be run at Seymour on Tuesday 4 September. (www.racingvictoria.net.au)
