THE Freedman brothers are leaving their magnificent training complex on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, reports the Daily Telegraph.

It says: Anthony Freedman, the sole occupant these days of the family's Markdel property near Rye, announced last night he had been granted approval to lease 50 stable boxes at Flemington from January 1.

The four brothers - Lee, Richard, Michael and Anthony - share in the ownership of Markdel and a decision is yet to be made about the property's long-term future.

The Freedmans built the property and moved there in 2002 and some of their greatest training achievements have come out of the 100-horse complex, including Hall of Famer Makybe Diva, who Lee prepared to win the 2004-05 Melbourne Cups and 2005 Cox Plate, champion sprinter and Royal Ascot winner Miss Andretti, and 2003 Caulfield Cup hero Mummify.

But after Lee decided to move to Sydney to train in partnership with Graeme Rogerson at Randwick this year and Michael now a leading trainer in Singapore, Anthony has been carrying the load at Rye and also contemplating his training future.

"Markdel is too big for me," Anthony Freedman said. "Fifty horses is the number I think I can do the job with and 50 down here doesn't make it viable.

"I'm very sad to leave Markdel."

Sky Channel media personality Richard Freedman said the brothers had yet to determine what they will do with Markdel.
