Lightly-raced five-year-old Zedi Knight will be looking to make up for lost time this campaign after he was sidelined in the spring after just one run.

The winner of five of his eight starts, Zedi Knight will resume in Saturday's Victoria Cup (1100m) at Caulfield which trainer Brendan McCarthy hopes will be a platform for a crack at the Group Three Standish Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on New Year's Day.

McCarthy said he was looking forward to testing Zedi Knight against the spring horses but those plans unravelled when he finished second last first-up at Caulfield on September 27.

"He ripped a shoe off and skidded all over the place in that race and then he got a virus," McCarthy said.

"It was disappointing because we ended up tipping him out after that."

The road back has again been a frustrating one for connections with Zedi Knight this week recovering from a foot abscess.

"The abscess busted out all right and he's 85 per cent at the moment," McCarthy said.

"With another two days he should be right.

"If he's not 100 per cent he won't be running, but he is going well.

"We gave him a jumpout the other day and he won it easily."

Zedi Knight appreciates give in the ground and would have won his first six starts but for talented sprinter Huxssen beating him at Cranbourne at his second start.

"He has got so much good form around him and a win over horses like Midnight Mustang so we are really looking forward to him coming back," McCarthy said.

"Really he has had only one preparation and with a bit of natural improvement he should be able to take that next step."

Zedi Knight comes up against a capacity field of 16 and four emergencies and jumps from gate one on Saturday and should be able to use his pace to take his usual forward position.

Others resuming at Caulfield are Time Matters, Jeuneyman, Lord Monty, Chairmanoftheboard, Dandy Dollar, and Hezabruiser.

Johnny Fiasco is second-up for trainer Nikki Burke after starting at big odds and finishing third at Sandown to Custodian and Jeteven who are both among his rivals again on Saturday.

The winner of five of his 18 starts, Johnny Fiasco thrashed his three-year-old stablemate Arnoux in a track gallop at Cranbourne last Tuesday.

Burke has accepted with Arnoux at both Moonee Valley on Friday night and in the Acryn Plate (1000m) at Caulfield.

His disappointing gallop against Johnny Fiasco has put Burke in a quandary about the best option for him.

"He has drawn barrier three at Moonee Valley which is pretty inviting but we will see," Burke said.

Arnoux won his only race at Sale last month but Burke is unsure if she will be training the gelding for much longer.

"It depends on what he does from here as we have had some offers for him to go overseas," Burke said.
