Talented stayer Zazabeau has been put down after breaking a foreleg during trackwork at Flemington where he had been due to race on Saturday.
Trained by Bart Cummings for a syndicate headed by his long time client Dato Tan Chin Nam, Zazabeau ran second to New Zealander Solid Billing in the Summer Cup (2400m) at Randwick at his last start.
Zazabeau was a full brother to Zazabelle who ran third in the 1999 Melbourne Cup won by stablemate Rogan Josh.
"It is a shame because he was just coming to a career best," Dato Tan's racing manager Duncan Ramage said.
"There were two nice races picked out for him in Melbourne over the coming weeks.
"He fractured a foreleg this morning and there was nothing else that could be done but to do the humane thing."
A typically slow maturing son of Zabeel, five-year-old Zazabeau had 26 starts for two wins and 11 placings.
In brighter news for Dato Tan, his spring stars So You Think, Viewed and Faint Perfume are all progressing well towards the autumn and last week he sold his first yearling by Pendragon, foundation sire at his Think Big Stud.
"Badger's Bloodstock bought the colt at the Magic Millions and he will be trained by Lee Freedman," Ramage said.
"It was the first progeny of Pendragon to go through a sale ring and to go to an international buyer is encouraging for the future."
Think Big Stud in the NSW southern highlands is named for Dato Tan's dual Melbourne Cup winner of the 1970s.
Pendragon was joined at stud by Prince Arthur in the spring but could have a more high profile companion this year in 2008 Melbourne Cup winner Viewed who added the 2009 Caulfield Cup to his impressive resume.
"Viewed will eventually stand at Think Big and it could be the spring of 2010," Ramage said.
"It depends what he does in the autumn.
"If he wins the races he's being set for it would rule him out of the Melbourne Cup because he would probably get too much weight."
Viewed is scheduled to run first-up in the Group One Orr Stakes (1400m) on February 6 on his way to the Australian Cup before heading back to Sydney campaign.
The likely return for Cox Plate winner So You Think is the Group Two Autumn Stakes on February 20 ahead of the Australian Guineas on March 6 while VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume could be seen in the William Reid Stakes on February 13.
"So You Think will have a jump-out on Friday week," Ramage said.
"At this stage he is likely to run in the Autumn Stakes and then the Australian Guineas but his program is up to Bart."
