Juvenile Alma's Fury might be a campaign away from realising his potential but trainer Paul Murray has seen enough to give him a shot at stakes success on Saturday.

The youngster will take his place in the Listed Fernhill Hcp (1600m) at Randwick at what will be his final start this preparation.

"He is measuring up against some of the nice horses and I think he's going to be a nice miler," Murray said.

"He'll be a better three-year-old but we thought we'd give him a go in this race on Saturday.

"It will be his grand final, after that he'll go for a spell and come back for some of the nice three-year-old races."

Alma's Fury kicked off his career with a strong win at Canberra last month, prompting Murray to bring him to town.

He settled near last in The Schweppes Stakes (1400m) on Golden Slipper day but was doing his best work late to finish eighth to Skilled, beaten just over three lengths.

"He won his maiden at Canberra so we took him to Sydney two weeks ago and he ran a real nice race," Murray said.

"(Jockey) Blake Shinn said he felt like a nice horse.

"He's by (2004 English Eclipse Stakes winner) Refuse To Bend and he seems to be looking for the mile."

Shinn again has the ride in the Fernhill and Alma's Fury has drawn well in gate three.

Anthony Cummings is also keen on his chances in the race with Chula Vista who has barrier nine and Glyn Schofield in the saddle.

The filly posted a resolute 3-1/2 length win on debut at Canterbury and will back up in the Group One Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday week if she performs in the Fernhill.

"She won her first start comfortably and I think she's got a really good future," Cummings said.

"She still has the L-plates on and this is a step up but she's got enough natural potential to give her a chance.

"The idea is to run in this race and then go to the Champagne, we thought the Fernhill was the best available option to get there."
