Guy Walter is hoping a wet track and a step up to 2400m for the first time can result in Yallingup producing his best in Saturday's Listed Winter Cup at Rosehill.

Yallingup is one of two Walter-trained runners in the $100,000 feature, with stablemate Twin Wing already proven at the distance with a win and four placings from five starts at the trip.

Walter said it was hard to split Yallingup and Twin Wing but said a wet track suited the pair who are backing up after running over 2000m at Randwick last Saturday.

Yallingup hasn't won since taking out the Group Three Frank Packer Plate (2000m) at Randwick in April last year.

Despite winning at Group level and finishing fourth in last year's Group One Epsom Handicap, Walter said Yallingup had been slightly disappointing in recent times.

"He has run a number of good races, but one disappointing aspect is his starts-to-wins ratio," Walter said.

"He started off very promisingly and when he went for a spell after winning the Packer Plate we thought there were good things in store for him, and there still could be because he's only lightly raced."

With five runs already under his belt this preparation, Walter has selected the Winter Cup as the time to test Yallingup over 2400m for the first time.

He said the gelding, who finished fourth in a 2000m Open Handicap won by With Ice on a heavy (8) at Randwick last Saturday, has trained on well ahead of the Winter Cup.

"You never know whether they will get the journey until you try them, but he certainly gives the impression he will," Walter said.

"He ran on strongly at the end of 2000 metres at Randwick on a heavy track last week, he's a relaxed horse and he's won at 2000 metres at Randwick before so I'm reasonably confident he'll cope with 2400 metres at Rosehill.

"This will be his sixth run this time in, so certainly fitness shouldn't be an issue."

Twin Wing finished third to Niwot in last year's Winter Cup and 2009 runner-up Two Towers will be among his rivals again on Saturday.

Twin Wing ran fifth in the same race as Yallingup at Randwick last week.

"He's a terrific, honest old fellow," Walter said of Twin Wing.

"Last start he got in behind them and pulled a bit, and he's not at his best then."

The Winter Cup will be the first time Twin Wing has been up to 2400m this preparation.

The seven-year-old won the Lord Mayor's Cup over the trip two years ago and was placed in both the Stayers' Cup and Winter Cup this time last year before running third in the Grafton Cup over 2350m.
