A switched on Whobegotyou, wearing blinkers for the first time, broke a run of eight successive defeats and maintained his unbeaten record at Moonee Valley with an impressive win in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes.

The four-year-old was slightly easy in the betting ring drifting from $2.10 to start the $2.40 favourite and he gave his supporters some anxious moments before the Group Two weight-for-age feature when he sprung a shoe behind the barrier and had to be re-plated by the farrier.

However, there were no problems during the race with Whobegotyou travelling sweetly in sixth place before sprinting home powerfully to score by a length from Mic Mac ($3.40) with star Singapore mare Jolie's Shinju ($10) another 2-3/4 lengths away third.

"The blinkers switched him on a lot more and not only that, coming back to Moonee Valley," said Whobegotyou's rider Damien Oliver.

"He really appreciates the track here and he was back to his best today.

"They dawdled through the first 1000 (metres). We expected the Singapore mare to go a bit quicker than that but she really had it all to herself.

"We quickened up really strongly from the 600 and the race was on in earnest then."

Oliver believes Whobegotyou, the reigning favourite for the $3 million Cox Plate (2040m) at the Valley on October 24, is an ideal type for the big race.

"You know there is no problem with the 2040 metres for him and he just loves Moonee Valley," Oliver said.

Whobegotyou has now won four from four on the Valley's StrathAyr track, three of them at Group Two level including the 2008 Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) and the AAMI Vase (2040m) which was his last win before the Chin Nam.

Trainer Mark Kavanagh now has to decide whether to backup Whobegotyou in next Saturday's Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield or wait three weeks for the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 3.

Trainer Greg Eurell described Mic Mac's effort as "a super run" and said the four-year-old was still on target for the Cox Plate.

He will make a decision on whether Mic Mac presses on to the weight-for-age championship after he has his first 2000m test in the Turnbull.

Dr Tan Kai Chah, managing owner of the Hippocrates Stable which races Singapore Derby winner Jolie's Shinju, was very happy with the run of the five-year-old mare who was making her Australian debut.

"This is a prep race for us, we are targeting the Cox Plate," Dr Tan said.

"This is the first time she's raced at Moonee Valley and against the best horses in Australia at this distance, so I think we have learned a lot.

"Next time she could improve a few lengths from this race."

Singapore-based Australian trainer Len Treloar, who is assisting the Jolie's Shinju team, said the mare could improve four or five lengths on Saturday's run.

Trainer Colin Little was quite happy with El Segundo's fast finishing fifth considering the first 1000m of the race was run in a slow 1:3.8s.

"He can't get home much better than that," he said of the 2007 Cox Plate winner who ran his last 800m in 45.18s and his final 600m in 32.78s, the fastest of the race.
