Hiskens Steeplechase prospect Pentiffic pleased his rider Trent Wells when he schooled at Werribee on Monday in preparation for tackling the big fences.

Wells and co-trainers Fran Houlahan and Brian Johnston expect it will be a formality that he will get his `chasing ticket when the Jumps Review Panel meets on Wednesday.

Wells rode Pentiffic to an impressive seven-length win in the Leslie Short Memorial Hurdle (3300m) at Sandown on Saturday and was aboard in the 2800m steeple trial which he had to satisfactorily compete in to qualify for `chasing.

"He went terrific and I'd be very surprised if he doesn't get his ticket," Wells said.

"We gave him a very quiet trial. I think he might have even run last but I had my feet in his mouth," Wells said.

"He was very impressive. Brian and Fran were tickled pink with him and it's onwards to the Hiskens.

"The main aim was just to get his ticket and I stayed four and five deep on him to make sure there were no hiccups."

Wells, 23, who moved from Tasmania two years ago have a crack at the Victorian scene, has ridden 19 jumps winners and needs just one more before he outrides his allowance.

His 1.5kg claim brought Pentiffic in with 66.5kg on Saturday.

Wells has forged a good association with the Houlahan-Johnston stable and landed his biggest win on Pentiffic in the Yalumba Classic Hurdle (3600m) at Oakbank in April.

The $200,000 A V Hiskens Steeple (3700m) is at Moonee Valley on July 25.

Another likely runner in the feature is Australian Hurdle winner Hooker Road, who opposed Pentiffic at Werribee with the same purpose of qualifying for steeplechasing.

Grand Annual Steeple winner Sir Pentire and Australian Steeple runner-up Brookton Mist are also Hiskens-bound.
