Trainer Kim Waugh's plans of launching a two-pronged attack on the Group One Sydney Cup hinge on the performances of stablemates Tangalooma and Risayla at Rosehill on Saturday.

Waugh won the Sydney Cup in 2005 with Mahtoum and believes it's time she won it again.

"It's been a while now and we're due for another go at it and hopefully these two will emerge as contenders by the time Saturday is done," Waugh said.

Tangalooma runs in the Listed Manion Cup (2400m), a race Mahtoum won in 2005, while Risayla lines up in the Listed Epona Stakes (1900m).

Five-year-old Tangalooma is part-owned by Rob Roulston and Steve Jones who also raced Mahtoum and comes into the race after running fifth to Newport in the Group Three Randwick City Stakes (2000m) on March 14.

"He's had three runs back now and is this is getting up to his right distance so we really like his chances, he pulled up brilliantly after that last run," Waugh said.

"He got back a fair way but he really hit the line strongly and that was very pleasing."

Waugh said the plan for the Zabeel gelding was to run him in the Group Two Chairman's Handicap (2600m) at Randwick on April 11, the same race Risayla would target if successful in the Epona.

The five-year-old mare was purchased in France where she was a winner over 2500 metres and raced up to 2800 metres before joining Waugh at Wyong on the NSW Central Coast last year.

She only beat one runner home last start in the Listed Aspirational Quality (1600m) won by Illuminates, who also races in the Epona, at Randwick on March 14.

"I thought her last run was pretty good, she got stuck on the fence but really finished off strongly and showed that she is looking for further now," Waugh said.

"The Sydney Cup depends on what she does in the next couple of runs, she's going to have to start landing some good prizemoney to get there.

"But I would love to see her run the 3200 metres because she's already shown that she handles staying trips in France."

Risayla registered her first Australian win at Warwick Farm over 1400 metres in February.

The $700,000 Sydney Cup (3200m) is at Randwick on April 25.
