Gai Waterhouse will avoid a showdown between Gooree-owned stablemates Dreamscape and Swift Alliance despite nominating the last start winners for the same race at Randwick on Saturday.

The two horses have been entered for a 1300 metre Open Handicap with Waterhouse to decide who will fly the flag for her after she returns home from a European holiday on Wednesday night.

"Only one will run," Waterhouse's racing manager Robyn Hartney said.

"We'll do the form once the weights come out and I'll talk to Gai before we decide.

"But both horses are fantastic and they both won really well first-up."

Promising colt Dreamscape won two Group races at his first preparation last spring but missed the autumn through a series of niggling setbacks.

He returned with a dominant victory at Randwick earlier this month and will be given his chance in some of the early Group races like the Missile Stakes at Rosehill on August 1 and Premiere Stakes at the same venue two weeks later.

"The original plan has always been to give him a couple of nice kills early then freshen him up in the stable and give him a couple of runs into the Epsom Handicap," Hartney said.

Swift Alliance, by 2002 AJC Australian Derby winner Don Eduardo, has won three of his four starts but would be facing his toughest test to date on Saturday.

The up-and-coming colt has been impressive in easier grade with his only defeat coming at the hands of subsequent Group Two winner Youthful Jack in November last year.

"Hugh Bowman rode both him and Dreamscape first-up and he took a big liking to Swift Alliance," Hartney said.

"He said he was very relaxed and when he gave him a squeeze at the top of the rise he probably got there too quickly.

"He was running on empty near the finish but he still had the class to win.

"But he's still a restricted horse and we want to see him go to open company and take that next step before we think about black-type."

Bowman won't be aboard on Saturday due to the return of stable jockey Blake Shinn from a European holiday with girlfriend and fellow jockey Kathy O'Hara.

Bowman already has his first Sydney jockeys' title sewn up and is just four wins shy of bringing up a century of metropolitan winners with four meetings of the season remaining.

Waterhouse is well positioned to claim her seventh trainers' premiership with a 4-1/2 win lead over Darley trainer Peter Snowden.
