Gai Waterhouse only had one runner at Randwick on Wednesday but it was all she needed to skip further ahead of Peter Snowden in the race for the Sydney trainers' premiership.

Tinjirarni, ridden by leading apprentice Daniel Ganderton, defeated Snowden-trained stablemates Reprobate and Freudian in the Hillsdale Plate (1150m) on the heavy Kensington track.

Snowden had five runners on the program but was unable to land a winner and now trails Waterhouse by 2-1/2 wins going into Saturday's Randwick meeting.

The in-form Ganderton is Waterhouse's stable apprentice and Tinjirarni's victory provided him with a winning treble.

He earlier claimed the second race on two-year-old Will To Win for trainer Anthony Cummings and guided Knot Out home in the Kingsford Hcp (1150m) to continue his successful combination with trainer Paul Messara.

Ganderton's winning rides on Tinjirarni and Knot Out could not have been more contrasting.

Tinjirarni enjoyed a lovely rails run from her inside barrier with Ganderton settling her in second spot before going to the front at the 600 metres and skipping clear in the straight to score comfortably.

Knot Out's performance one race earlier was not so conventional.

Ganderton steered a wide path in the straight on the advice of Messara, who had walked the track earlier and told Ganderton the outside was the place to be.

Ganderton admitted he wasn't so sure but he backed the trainer's judgement.

"When I walked the track I didn't feel as strongly as Paul did about the outside but he was adamant and in the end, he was right," Ganderton said.

Knot Out settled just behind the speed for most of the trip before Ganderton made his move toward the outside shortly after straightening.

While Knot Out was shifting ground to find his wide lane, No Respite burst through the pack on the inside and at one stage looked as though he would score.

But Knot Out kicked strongly and held off the runner-up's challenge by a long neck with Flaming Rock another five lengths away third.

Messara admitted that if his plan to go wide in the straight had not worked, he feared explaining the tactic to prominent part-owner and good friend Dr Geoff Chapman.

"He's a pretty tough customer the Doctor and I was thinking about him and what I'd say to him all the way down the straight," Messara said.

Ganderton celebrated a winning treble at Eagle Farm on Saturday winning the Queensland Cup on Cape Breton for trainer Danny Williams after earlier landing a double for Messara on Battlefield in the Listed Ascot Handicap and two-year-old Savoia.

"I like the way Daniel rides, he's suited to my horses and we're forming a good combination," Messara said.
