Trainer Chris Waller's gamble to send Pressday to Queensland for the winter paid off handsomely when the youngster scored a convincing win in the Group Two Champagne Classic at Doomben.

Pressday, ridden by Nash Rawiller, stormed down the centre of the track to down Toowoomba colt Spirit Of Boom by 1-1/4 lengths in Saturday's 1200-metre feature.

Buffering's unbeaten run came to an end when he finished 1-1/2 lengths away third.

Waller took a huge risk by giving Pressday only two weeks in the paddock following a Golden Slipper campaign which ended in failure in the Pago Pago Stakes at Rosehill in March.

"I tried to get him into the Golden Slipper but mentally he wasn't ready," Waller said.

"It was a big risk to bring him here to Brisbane as he only had two weeks out in the paddock after his Golden Slipper campaign."

Waller bought Pressday for $38,000 at the Inglis Classic yearling sales in Sydney last year.

"I race with him a close friend of mine, Tony Muollo, and our wives and to win this makes it very special," he said.

Waller is uncertain of his spring plans with the son of Domesday after he completes his winter mission aimed at the Group Two Sires' Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 5 and the Group One TJ Smith (1600m) at the same venue a week later.

"To be competitive in the Sires he had to run well in this," Waller said.

"He's also in the TJ Smith but I'll see how he does here before looking at the spring with him."

Pressday's win was the second of the day for Waller at Doomben after he earlier scored with Stryker in the Group Three Fred Best Classic (1350m).

Runner-up Spirit Of Boom produced another mighty effort to back up his previous victory in the Listed Ken Russell Memorial at the Gold Coast on May 8.

Trainer Tony Gollan will now pull up stumps for the winter with the son of Sequalo and has scrapped plans to head to Sydney for the Group Three San Domenico Stakes (1200m) at Randwick in August.

"It was a great run and if you swap alleys with the winner who was just inside us I think we win," Gollan said.

"I want to give him a good break now. He's done so well but I don't think he'll go for the San Domenico now but I might take him to Melbourne for one run before getting him ready for the Magic Millions Trophy in January."

Buffering's trainer Rob Heathcote was delighted with his youngster's effort and hasn't ruled out a return clash with Pressday in the Sires' Produce.
