It may be mid-spring but Brian Wakefield left Doomben on Saturday dreaming about winter and next year's carnival of riches in Brisbane.

Wakefield's forward thinking was inspired by recent stable acquisition Joint Chiefs and the horse's scintillating victory in the RSL Queensland Handicap (1020m).

A former bolter and Gai Waterhouse cast-off, Joint Chiefs overcame a seemingly impossible position when he unleashed a powerful burst halfway up the straight and put paid to his rivals in three big bounds to post a half-length win.

Wakefield had resigned himself to defeat before winning rider Michael Cahill produced his master stroke and the emerging trainer quickly acknowledged much better victories were in store for the General Nediym gelding.

"I didn't expect him to win from where he was in the straight. He still doesn't know what it's all about and the winter carnival next year is the obvious aim," Wakefield said.

"I'm not saying he's up to the major races at this stage but there are some minor sprints that we will have to think about."

A half-brother to former top-line Hong Kong galloper All Thrills Too, Joint Chiefs ($2.80 fav) took his record to five wins from seven attempts when he beat Jad ($26) by a half-length with Overanxious ($7) a long head back third.

Earlier, Eagle Farm trainer Lawrie Mayfield-Smith continued his run of success when Victorian cast-off Tarrayoukyan scored a hard fought win in the Environmental Handicap (1640m).

Mayfield-Smith is enjoying a stellar run and Tarrayoukyan gave the horseman his sixth metropolitan winner this season to follow up on the 30 city winners he prepared last season.

Aided by a copybook Stathi Katsidis ride, Tarrayoukyan ($3.90 fav) rounded up the leaders passing the 500m and the Zeditave gelding toughed it out in the straight to score a nose win over perennial bridesmaid Mystic Vibe ($5).

Our Scooby Doo ($8) battled in the straight to finish almost three lengths back in third with Silent Movie ($6) not far way in fourth.

Mayfield-Smith said Tarrayoukyan had proven his own worst enemy when unplaced last start and praised Katsidis' silken hands.

"He can pull if he doesn't get cover but Stathi put him away in a nice spot and he settled beautifully for him," Mayfield-Smith said.

"He wasn't up to them in Melbourne but he'll do the job in Brisbane."
