The Vo Rogue Plate at Doomben later this month is shaping as a "mini" Magic Millions Trophy for Queensland's best three-year-olds.
All three placegetters in Saturday's Mode Handicap (1200m) at Doomben look set for a rematch in the 1350-metre Doomben feature on December 27 in the final dress rehearsal for the $1 million Magic Millions Trophy (1400m) at the Gold Coast on January 10.
Trainer Gillian Heinrich is likely to give Feline Flyer her first start beyond 1200 metres in the Vo Rogue Plate after the daughter of Catbird held on to down Toowoomba filly Express Air by a neck in the Mode Handicap.
Trainer Alan Bailey is also searching for another lead-up for third placegetter High Roll'n Woman ahead of her Magic Millions assignment and has earmarked the Vo Rogue Plate as the preferred option.
Heinrich is amazed how Feline Flyer keeps taking the next step after recording her first metropolitan win and her fourth win from only six starts.
"She's an amazing filly and keeps stepping up each time," Heinrich said.
"We're still a month away from the Magic Millions so she'll need another start. We were fairly confident with her and I thought our only worry was High Roll'n Woman as she's a very good filly."
Feline Flyer held on to score by a neck from Express Air, who was left flat-footed in the barriers before producing a sensational finish to just fail to haul in the winner.
Trainer Rex Lipp was delighted with Express Air, who was having her first start since she knocked boom filly Zero Rock off her pedestal over 1300 metres at Eagle Farm in September.
Express Air's jockey Jason Holder gave connections a glowing report after the race.
"I thought she was going to win on the corner but she had to make up too much ground," Holder said.
"She's a lovely relaxed filly but she's looking for more ground. She just stood there when the barriers opened and came out last."
Lipp has given up trying to teach Express Air to jump cleanly and is aware she can't afford to give away a start on the tight turning Gold Coast track.
"I wasn't disappointed with that run. It was very good but if we could only get her to jump out of the barriers," Lipp said.
"She's always missed the start right through her career."
Bailey blamed High Roll'n Woman's 58.5kg after his three-year-old filled the minor placing, a further 1-1/4 lengths away.
"It was a good run and I can't be critical. She had a lot of weight and she's not very big," he said.
