Vigor bound for Perth

Promising four-year-old Vigor is Perth-bound after racking up two consecutive wins at Flemington.

Trainer Danny O'Brien said he had plenty of options for the O'Reilly gelding in the west including the Group One Railway Stakes (1600m) and the Group Two Perth Cup (3200m).

"He hasn't done a lot so far this spring so there's plenty left in the tank," O'Brien said.

Vigor won third up over 1600m at Caulfield on October 15 when ridden by Danny Nikolic, but was a lucky pick-up ride for Glen Boss in Saturday's 1600m Graza Trophy replacing the currently suspended James Winks.

Boss brought Vigor ($7.50) with a strong run down the middle of the track and although veering in sharply he scored comfortably by 1-1/2 lengths from Voice Commander with Arlington three-quarters of a length away third.

"He might go to the Railway and he might end up in the Perth Cup as well," O'Brien said.

Vigor, who has won four and finished runner-up in two of his 11 starts, has won up to 2040m and ran sixth to Zarita in the South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville last April.

"He has a good turn of foot, but he ran in quite badly," Boss said.

The win was the first of the four-day Melbourne Cup carnival for O'Brien who just missed with Barbaricus who was beaten a nose by Thesio in the Group One Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) on Derby Day.

Master O'Reilly was the best of his three Melbourne Cup runners finishing fourth to Viewed.

He said Master O'Reilly, Barbaricus (19th) and Moonee Valley Cup winner Gallopin, who choked down in the Cup, had all been sent to the paddock.

But Lucky Owners colt Lucky Thunder will run in Saturday's Group Two Sandown Guineas (1600m) following his encouraging half-neck second to Dr Doute's in the Group Three Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) on Derby Day.
