Jockey Rikki Cartwright is looking for an especially satisfying win on Just Look in the St George Stakes at Caulfield after "discovering" him more than a year ago.

The five-year-old will be on trial for the Group One Australian Cup in Saturday's Group Two event over 1800 metres and if successful would give 37-year-old Cartwright his most important success.

A win would be all the sweeter for the veteran jockey as he recommended to close friend David Sottile that he buy the gelding as a tried four-year-old after overseas deal to sell the horse overseas fell through when he failed a vet check.

Formerly trained by John Fleming, Just Look posted a win and two seconds from his first four starts before Sottile bought him and sent him to Mornington trainer Lyn Tolson.

Tolson said Just Look had a reputation for being erratic and attacking other horses and when he arrived at her stables was like "a big baby."

However Just look has improved with maturity and in 10 starts for Tolson has won four races, including three in a row culminating in a barnstorming victory in the Listed Lord Stakes (1700m) at Caulfield on Boxing Day.

Last month he was also third in the John Dillon Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield and beaten a short half half head and a short half head when third to God's Hand and Scenic Shot in the Selangor Turf Club Handicap (1800m) on February 8.

Apprentice Nicholas Hall has ridden Just Look at his past two starts but Cartwright, who rides the horse every morning, always has first refusal and reunites with him on Saturday.

Tolson said the prospect of Just Look taking on Group One winners Theseo and Sirmione in the St George was "frightening" but she knew the son of Fraar would give his best.

"He always does," Tolson said. "He has never been further back than fifth and hopefully that won't change."

Tolson believes the St George will be a trickier race than it appears and tactics will be significant.

"I am thinking the obvious may not be so obvious and it is not as black and white as everyone is thinking," Tolson said,.

She said Just Look would be ridden more conservatively than last start when he was on the pace in a slowly run race but doesn't expect him to be last like he was in the Lord Stakes.

"I don't think with 59 kilos that he can give horses like Theseo the same start he gave away in the Lord and run them down," Tolson said.

Cartwright is keen to win a Group Two race after he was controversially denied his biggest win on Magic Jet who lost the 2006 Group Two Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley on protest.

Cartwright said Just Look was an emerging horse and he rated him a genuine each-way chance especially after getting so close to Scenic Shot last start.

TAB Sportsbet has Just Look at $21 while Scenic Shot is $7.

Theseo, who won the Epsom Handicap and Mackinnon Stakes in the spring, is the $2.50 favourite following the non appearance of Maldivian who is out due to injury.
