Promising three-year-old filly Umatain resumes at Sandown on Saturday, beginning a campaign aimed at the Australasian Oaks and the South Australian Fillies Classic.

Trainer Clinton McDonald rested the daughter of Umatilla after she landed the Moet and Chandon (1700m) at Flemington on VRC Oaks Day when she defeated Azwa by a short-half-head at her fifth start.

At her previous outing she had broken through for her first win in a Geelong 1403m maiden.

"She's a lovely filly, she's improved and come back bigger and stronger," McDonald said.

"She looks like she's going to measure up the way she's going. I think she can hopefully get some black type this time in."

The Group One Schweppes Australasian Oaks (2000m) is run at Morphettville on March 20, while the SA Fillies Classic (2500m) is held at the same track on April 10.

Brad Rawiller will ride Umatain in Saturday's Mahaasin Hcp (1400m) as well as stablemate Devils Force in the Rancher Hcp (1300m).

McDonald said Devils Force was potentially the best horse in his stable but had been frustrated by muscle soreness.

"After he races he keeps pulling up with little niggly things. I'm hoping to have him right for Saturday otherwise I won't run him," he said.

The Al Mahar three-year-old was runner-up to Common Interest in the Schweppes Tonic (1000m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.

"He was spot on that day, that was the only time I've had him 100 per cent right," he said.

A Sale two-year-old maiden (1200m) winner at his second of six starts, Devils Force resumed from a 10-week break with a fourth to Our Baby Bonus over 1100m at Caulfield on January 9.

Devils Force is out of Penn, an unraced Hennessy mare who is a half-sister to Caulfield Guineas winner Alfa.
