Grafton Cup winner Twin Wing will stay in training and be aimed at further stakes glory early in the spring.

The front-running stayer was at his finest last Thursday week at Grafton when he found enough reserves to hold off Frozone and Ironstein at the end of the 2350 metres.

Trainer Guy Walter said the Wyong and Newcastle Cups in September were likely targets for Twin Wing in the early part of his eight-year-old season.

"He has done well since Grafton and we have decided to give him a freshen up and go to Wyong," Walter said.

"He went to Grafton off a four week break and that worked for him.

"He seems to be better when he's kept on the fresh side.

"After Wyong we will look at the Newcastle Cup and then send him for a spell.

"He is a great old horse and I'd like to think we can give him a good break then bring him back next year for the Grafton Cup again.'

The seven-year-old Twin Wing recorded his first win for two years when he took out the Winter Cup (2400m) at Rosehill on June 5.

He then finished third in the Stayer's Cup (3200m) on June 19 before being freshened for the Grafton 2350m feature.

A favourite in the Walter stable, Twin Wing always gives punters a great sight with his freewheeling pattern of racing which also leaves him vulnerable to attack at end of his races.

Jay Ford has ridden him at his past three starts and rated him to perfection at Grafton where he held off Frozone by a short head.

The Listed Wyong cup (2100m) is on September 3 with the Newcastle Cup on September 16 over 2300 metres.

Although Walter has had a quiet year regarding Group One and metropolitan performers, he has picked up the Gosford and Goulburn premierships and is half a win behind Kris Lees in the Wyong title with one meeting left this season.
