Tony Vasil is hopeful that a Queensland winter spell may turn out to be the making of talented sprinter True Tales.

The four-year-old built up a strong following after winning his first four starts a year ago but his 15.1-hand frame was always going to challenge him.

"He went through his early races in a very workmanlike manner but he was always a little fella," Vasil said.

He said the trip to Brisbane last winter resulted in an impressive transformation of the gelding who is significantly more robust.

"After he was unlucky a couple of times in Queensland we wanted to leave him up there for a spell and the best thing to come out of it was that he finally got a growth spurt," Vasil said.

"When he came back from up north he had furnished and was much stronger.

"It was something I really noticed when I first jumped back on him this preparation and my knees and legs were wider apart."

First start back from Queensland, True Tales successfully graduated to open class when he sprinted home from off the pace to score on Ballarat Cup day over 1200 metres.

It was his sixth win in 12 starts and he will get the chance to enhance his record when he lines up in Saturday's Sky High Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield.

"His win at Ballarat was quite good under the circumstances as he did not get any favours," Vasil said.

"We will run him Saturday but where we go from there I am not sure.

"We have no definite plans with him but it is a little step to try and find where he is going."

Vasil said the Listed Christmas Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on Boxing Day was among the options in what is likely to be a short campaign.

"He is a horse who appreciates a little bit of give in the ground so at this time of the year I am a little bit unsure how far we will go with him," Vasil said.

"He might have a short preparation and come back when the tracks have a bit more give in them.

"I don't want to be thrashing him on concrete tracks."

True Tales is among 26 entries for the Sky High and is likely to have a claiming apprentice to help with his 57kg.

Amberino (98) is the highest-rated runner and with 58kg is a kilo below topweight Tears I Cry (95) and has a half-kilo less than Okay Oky (94) and Fast Future (93).
