Patinack Farm's assistant trainer Toby Edmonds expects his boss Nathan Tinkler to have a powerful Victoria Derby prospect following the Group One TJ Smith at Eagle Farm.

Tinkler will have two representatives, Levi's Choice and Run For Levi, lining up in Saturday's 1600-metre feature in his bid for back-to-back TJ Smiths.

The former mining magnate won last year's race with the Jason Coyle-trained Linky Dink.

Edmonds, who is in charge of Patinack Farm's Gold Coast operation, believes Levi's Choice's pedigree gives the youngster a better hope than his stablemate.

Levi's Choice produced an outstanding effort after being trapped wide when third to Pressday in the Group Two Sires' Produce Stakes at Eagle Farm last week.

Run For Levi showed his class when holding on for a narrow victory in the Listed Doomben Slipper (1350m) last month.

"Levi's Choice has a Derby pedigree and there's no worry he'll get 1600 metres," Edmonds said.

"He was caught wide in a slow-run race in the Sires but he still hit the line strongly.

"If he wins he'll go for a spell but I'd imagine Nathan and (trainer) John (Thompson) will sit down after this race and start formulating plans for the Victoria Derby in the spring."

Edmonds admitted Levi's Choice faced a tough task lining up for his third start in as many weeks while Run For Levi has had the benefit of a fortnight's break since his Doomben Slipper victory.

"It's hard on any horse to back up three weeks in a row let alone a two-year-old," Edmonds said.

"But Levi's Choice has a very good constitution and should be able to cope.

"The only negative with him will be his mental attitude on the day."

Levi's Choice will again be ridden by Hugh Bowman and has drawn perfectly in barrier three while Run For Levi, gate 16, will be ridden by Craig Williams.

Williams, who has returned to Australia following a stint in Japan, replaces Nash Rawiller who partners the Chris Waller-trained Pressday in the absence of suspended rider Jim Cassidy.

Edmonds hasn't dismissed Run For Levi's hopes of causing an upset from his wide gate.

"He'll have to press forward from the draw and his win last time was a tough effort," he said.

"He puts himself in his races but the family tree suggests he may struggle to run the trip.

"But if he can run the distance he could be right in the finish."
