Lightly-raced stayer The Tiger added bite to next month's Victoria Derby when he led all the way to win Wednesday's Listed Geelong Classic.

Trained by Colin and Cindy Alderson, the three-year-old son of Catbird was dominant as he shot clear at the top of the straight and won easily by 2-3/4 lengths from New Zealander My Scotsgrey with Rebel Raider 1-1/4 lengths away third in the 2206m feature.

Michael Eskander's Betstar dramatically wound in The Tiger's Derby quote from $81 to $13 on the strength of the win while My Scotsgrey was shortened from $26 to $15 for the Classic.

Cindy Alderson said the win reflected the stable's opinion of The Tiger who was having only his seventh race start.

"We always planned to run him in the Derby," Alderson said.

"He is a bit one-paced but we thought he would stay and he proved it today.

"He hasn't got a good turn of foot but if he can keep punching along like that then I think he will give them a run for their money (in the Derby)."

Jockey Rhys McLeod got a scare when The Tiger knuckled when the gates opened but he was able to get the gelding to recover quickly and put him on the speed.

McLeod said he was confident The Tiger would run out Wednesday's distance and believes the extra 300 metres in the Derby won't be an issue.

"It was a good solid win and he is going to stay, he is sound. I reckon he's right in it," McLeod said.

Alderson paid tribute to McLeod who has been riding The Tiger in all his work.

"Rhys has been coming down and getting familiar with him," Alderson said.

"He knew what he had underneath him today and that is why he saved up to the corner and then kicked away."

Disappointments today were Palm Trilogy who finished sixth and the favourite Memorise who was second last.

Both horses eased in Derby betting, from $26 to $67 and $11 to $41 and respectively.
