Group One winner Tears I Cry has had his workload ramped up in order to revive his fortunes on the anniversary of his last win at Flemington.

Warrnambool trainer Anne McGrath, who also part-owns the eight-year-old, has noted the improvement in the gelding ahead of his third run this campaign in Saturday's Zouki Handicap (1440m) at Flemington.

Tears I Cry hasn't won since Geelong trainer David Bourke prepared him to win the same race a year ago when he was one of the outsiders at $21.

McGrath has trained Tears I Cry at various stages of his career and took back control of the horse this year when she found more time to commit to training.

Tears I Cry's last two wins have been at Flemington with his most notable being the Group One Emirates Stakes at 100-1 in November 2007 when he was trained by Ciaron Maher.

McGrath said Tears I Cry lost form after his most recent win but she has pushed him harder in his work and is optimistic the results will show on Saturday.

"I really think he's going a lot better and I am crossing my fingers and toes," McGrath said.

"I haven't been quite happy with the way he has been finishing off his races so I have worked him a bit harder and he's revelled in that.

"I am really stoked with him and and if he has improved as much as I think he has he will be right in it on Saturday."

While Flemington provides much better prizemoney, the $25,000 Woodford Cup (1700m) at Warrnambool on December 27 is a race McGrath is particularly keen to win with Tears I Cry on his home track.

"My aim is the Woodford Cup but if I can pick that race up at Flemington on the way through that would be great," McGrath said.

Tears I Cry has won seven of his 41 starts and more than $800,000 prizemoney.

First-up this campaign at Mount Gambier he was beaten less than two lengths when fifth of six runners and last start finished midfield when sixth to Bohika over 1300m at Stawell.

He drops three kilos to 56.5kg on Saturday and will be ridden by Neville Wilson who has ridden him at his past two runs.
