The Gai Waterhouse-trained Kinnersley could be headed for the Tasmanian Derby at the end of the month after his slashing win at Randwick on New Year's Day.

Kinnersley races in the well-known purple with white stars of Star Thoroughbreds, which is owned by Tasmanian Denise Martin.

Martin was elated after watching the Al Maher three-year-old defeat We Sing We Dance by three lengths in the TAB Jackpots Today Handicap (1800m).

"I said to Gai that I've always wanted to have a runner in the Tassie Derby, now we might have a go with this one, we'll see," Martin said.

"Either way, I definitely think we've got a stakeswinner on our hands."

Kinnersley started the $2.90 favourite and with Blake Shinn aboard, cruised forward from his wide alley to slot behind leader Sir Gwynn.

On straightening, Kinnersley rocketed away and had the race in his keeping 200 metres from home.

The Group Three Tasmanian Derby (2200m) is at Hobart on January 30.

Waterhouse, who was at the Gold Coast on Friday, has already indicated that Rockwood would head for Tasmania for a crack at the Hobart and Launceston Cups in February.
