Gary Portelli is keeping an open mind about the immediate future of Gold Trail as he looks for a form turnaround from the Group One sprinter in the Starlight Stakes.

"We are not writing him off yet," Portelli said.

"There's still a few boxes to be ticked before we start to panic about where he's at."

Good enough last year to compete on the international stage, Gold Trail returns to Sydney racing at Rosehill on Saturday after what Portelli believes were two inconclusive Melbourne weight-for-age runs.

"There are a couple of little question marks over him," Portelli said.

"But I'm hoping getting him back to the Sydney way of going helps him fire.

"Having said that he got bogged down in the Bletchingly Stakes (at Caulfield).

"The fence was off and not one horse who raced on the rail that day finished in the placings.

"He's been beaten just under four lengths so you can't be too hard on him."

Now a seven-year-old, Gold Trail hasn't raced in Sydney since finishing fifth in last year's Group One Galaxy at Randwick.

Brenton Avdulla has been booked to ride the seven-time winner in a race for the first time on Saturday.

Gold Trail was one of 13 nominations the Australian Turf Club received for the Starlight.

The entry list at Monday's deadline included two other Group One winners - Atomic Force and Pressday.

Pressday's trainer Chris Waller has also entered Syreon in the $100,000 Listed sprint while Peter Snowden has nominated last season's Danehill Stakes winner Soul.

Snowden, who has Golden Slipper winner Sepoy resuming at Caulfield on Saturday, is relying on Anise as his only runner in the $125,000 Group Three San Domenico Stakes (1100m).

As expected, Magic Millions winner Karuta Queen was also among the 11 entries along with talented colt Foxwedge and the David Payne-trained Defiant Dame.
