An impressive debut and subsequent 16-1/2-length barrier trial success ensures plenty of eyes will be on two-year-old Startreusse at Randwick on Saturday.

The Chris Waller-trained two-year-old is $1.85 favourite to make it two straight wins in the Bates Bikes Handicap (1200m).

Following a strong midweek Canterbury win last month when he defeated subsequent Brisbane stakeswinner Fontelina, Waller labelled Startreusse right up with the best two-year-olds in his stable.

A 16-1/2-length barrier trial win last week at Rosehill did nothing to dampen the hype surrounding the colt.

Startreusse will race in the famous cerise silks of the Ingham family for the first time on Saturday after being purchased from BC3 Thoroughbreds.

Waller acknowledges Startreusse is a talented galloper but said the son of Starcraft needed to learn to settle more to really fulfil his potential.

"He's a nice horse but he's still got a lot to learn," Waller said.

"Once he puts it all together he'll be a nice horse.

"He's just got to do things properly. He just wants to do everything at 100 miles an hour at the moment so he's just got to come back a little bit."

Waller said that was the case when he streeted the field in the recent 900m barrier trial hitout.

"He just jumped and ran," he said.

Sydney's leading trainer, who is fast closing in on a breakthrough premiership this season, also had Startreusse nominated for Monday's Listed Dalrello Stakes (1200m) in Brisbane but didn't accept for that race on Thursday.

"It (the Sydney race) is worth the same prizemoney with the BOBS bonuses," Waller said.

Apprentice Jason Collett, who rode a winning treble at Randwick two weeks ago, has the ride on Startreusse.

Stablemate Flying Zero is also entered for the event but is not a definite starter.

"I'm not 100 per cent sure if he'll run or not, there's a 1300-metre race next week we could wait for," Waller said.
