"That's two springs we've missed with him now. He's a horse who likes the autumn so we'll continue on with him now, probably right through the winter because he's a horse we just can't get right in the spring," Moroney said.
Moroney said the gelding would run in the Listed Auckland Racing Club Hcp (1600m) at Flemington on April 25, a race he won last year, before going to Adelaide for the Group Three $170,000 Gerard Corporation Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville on May 9.
"We'll get on the road with him and possibly end up having a crack at the Doomben Cup with him," he said.
"He came back looking great last spring - the spring before he came back looking ordinary - we thought we had him right but he just went backwards with his work."
Despite not coming up in springtime, Skiddaw Peak has built up a good record of eight wins and three thirds from 18 starts and apart from his two Listed race wins he also defeated Pinnacles in a tight finish to the 2008 Echuca Cup (1400m).
Yalumba Stakes winner Douro Valley worked home well under his big weight of 61kg to finish sixth, while Cox Plate runner-up Zipping did likewise under topweight of 62kg to finish seventh of the 14 runners over the unsuitable 1400m trip.
Vlad Duric cut the corner on Falaise ($4 fav) on a day when riders were content to come four wide away from the rail and he wound up fourth with Our Smoking Joe, under new trainer Ray Coombes, a pleasing fifth.
Earlier, Raffaello won his second successive race at his third start for new trainer Mark Kavanagh in the Doncaster BMW Hcp (1700m) to earn a crack at the Group Three Easter Cup (2000m) at Caulfield on April 11.
Having won a midweek 1400m race at Sandown on March 18 under 58kg, the Encosta De Lago four-year-old entire had a seven-kilo weight drop in Saturday's event.
Ridden by apprentice Ibrahim Gundogdu, Raffaello ($4.20 fav) settled well in seventh place and finished strongly to score by 2-1/4 lengths from Light Vision with Daka's Gem 3-3/4 lengths away third.
Topweight and Melbourne Cup placegetter C'est La Guerre raced in third spot but weakened under his 60kg to finish fifth.
