Blinkers go on Shoot Out in the Vo Rogue Plate at Doomben, the next step in a career trainer John Wallace believes will eventually lead to Group One glory.

A son of dual Derby winner High Chapparal who is also the sire of Cox Plate winner So You Think, three-year-old Shoot Out has had four starts for two wins, including the QTC Sires' Produce Stakes in May.

He ran sixth, beaten less than two lengths when he resumed in the Gold Edition (1200m) at Eagle Farm last Saturday week after jumping from barrier 14.

"The 1350 metres on Saturday may still be too short but there is a nice long run to the first turn so he should be able to get into a nice position," Wallace said.

"The blinkers go on. They should help him concentrate.

"He has been working in them and I wouldn't say they excited him too much.

"I was happy with his last start, he never really got a decent crack at them."

The $1 million Magic Millions Trophy (1400m) on his home track at the Gold Coast on January 9 is the summer target for Shoot Out with Wallace planning to give him a short break before preparing him for the AJC Australian Derby.

"He needs a good pace on and they go hard in those races at the Gold Coast," he said.

"He has a very strong finish.

"The Derby in Sydney is a long term aim.

"He is bred to be a rock solid stayer and I think he will be winning a big race before too long."

Out of Pentire mare Pentamerous, Shoot Out is a half brother to WA Oaks winner Cassandara Shadow.

"He is a beautiful placid horse," Wallace said.

"He also has a great turn of foot."

A field of 17 will contest the Vo Rogue including Dual Chamber who won the Gold Edition.

Shoot Out was the $4.20 equal favourite with Sydney filly Graceful Anna in TAB Sportsbet's first markets with Dual Chamber an $8.50 chance.

Shoot Out has filled a void in Wallace's stable left by the retirement of stakes winning sprinter Mitanni.

"Linda Gruddy who owns Shoot Out has Mitanni up at her property Peachester Lodge on the Sunshine Coast, Wallace said.

"He's in a big paddock with a horse she and her husband Graham owned called King Wells.

"They run around together and have a good time."
