Shoot Out's trainer John Wallace has warned the four-year-old's Memsie Stakes rivals to bring their A game to Caulfield on Saturday.

The next wave of potential spring stars steps out in the Group Two feature to take on the AJC Australian Derby winner who is the Cox Plate favourite courtesy of his recent wins in the Bletchingly and Liston Stakes.

"So far we've just been mucking about with him," Wallace said.

"We'll be meeting some real good ones now and it gets more serious but I'm looking forward to it.

"This week they have to perform to beat us."

Shoot Out relegated 2009 winner Predatory Pricer to second in the Liston which was run without Cox Plate titleholder So You Think due to the wet track.

But Bart Cummings plans to unleash So You Think along with leading Cups contenders Faint Perfume and Dariana on Saturday.

Predatory Pricer is also expected to be there along with Whobegotyou, runner-up to Mic Mac in last year's Memsie.

Wallace's deliberate plan to start Shoot Out's campaign early has led to questions as to whether the gelding is too brilliant for the staying races later in the spring.

But Wallace dismisses that.

"This way we can race him every two weeks, or maybe three, and just have to look after him in between," he said.

"He's really done well since the Liston and will have a bit of workout on Tuesday.

"I couldn't be happier and I can't wait for Saturday.

"He is one special horse."

Shoot Out is the equal favourite with VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume for the Caulfield Cup and on the third line of TAB Sportsbet betting for the Melbourne Cup.

Faint Perfume also heads that market alongside last year's winner Shocking.

A decision on whether Shoot Out contests both Cups as well as the Cox Plate won't be made until later in the spring but Wallace has no fears about him being up to the task.

He has had previous experience preparing a horse for the 3200 metres of the Melbourne Cup off a long preparation.

Oompala went Flemington on November 1, 1994 and ran a slashing third behind Jeune and Paris Lane at what was the 15th start of a six month campaign that included a couple of short freshen-ups.

"I'm very happy with how it's going," he said.
