Perth Cup winner Guest Wing will be among the major players this spring for West Australian trainer Shane Edwards who has set up a satellite stable at Geelong.

The five-year-old is among nine horses Edwards has sent across the Nullarbor for an assault on Melbourne's spring carnival.

His first runner Foreverclever finished third in a maiden at Geelong on Friday and Guest Wing will line up in Saturday's Group Two PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

Edwards said there were few suitable races for Guest Wing and some of his other better-performed horses in Perth.

He said Guest Wing's rating of 93 made it particularly difficult to find a spring launching pad and he would be pleased with a midfield finish in the Lawrence.

"Unfortunately he's not a genuine weight-for-age horse but it is probably not the strongest Lawrence or Liston Stakes we have seen," Edwards said.

"He is not suited at the weights but probably half the field isn't.

"If he finished midfield that would be fine with me.

"We will go back on him and he will probably settle last so if he can pinch off a few places in the run home we will be happy."

Edwards said Guest Wing had come up well after he lost form with a foot abscess at the end of his summer campaign.

He was particularly encouraged with how he finished off in a jumpout at Geelong last week when he finished second, beating home Moudre.

"He's had two nice trials and last week showed us he was on track," Edwards said.

"His third run in he should be at his right trip to show up.

Guest Wing is an outsider on Saturday at $101 with TAB Sportsbet in a race dominated by Whobegotyou at $1.90 and Lights Of Heaven ($2.60).

AJC Oaks winner Absolutely is next best at $12.

Trainer Mick Kent said Absolutely had furnished into a lovely mare and would be aimed at the Caulfield Cup.

"I would expect just a nice finishing run from her on Saturday but I'm very happy with her," Kent said.

"After the Lawrence she'll probably go to the Memsie, then the Dato Tan Chin Nam or the Stocks Stakes on the same day."

Having won the Perth Cup on New Year's Day, Guest Wing is qualified for the Melbourne Cup and will edge up in distance towards the Caulfield Cup or the Geelong Cup as options on the way to the Melbourne Cup.

The Perth Cup is one the bigger wins for Edwards who is based at Egerton Stud in the Swan Valley.

His other big-race winners have been No Questions (Karrakatta Plate), Westerly Breeze (WA Oaks), Cassandara Shadow (WA Oaks), Rock My Pago (Belmont Oaks) and Phenomenons (JC Roberts Stakes and Melvista Stakes).

Among his spring carnival hopes are three-year-olds Monsili and Dr Indy who have been entered for the Group One Caulfield Guineas on October 8 and are also targeting the Victoria Derby.

Edwards also trains exciting four-year-old Mister Moneypenny who has won five of his nine starts and is set to resume later this month after injuring his back last summer when he had two unplaced runs in Melbourne.
