Shane Scriven tuned up for his Expressway Stakes assignment on Burdekin Blues with victory aboard Frozone at Randwick, substituting for the injured Glen Colless.
Colless suffered a severe foot injury in a fall at Eagle Farm on Wednesday and Gold Coast trainer Alan Bailey enlisted the services of a fellow Queenslander in Scriven for Frozone in Friday's AJC Convention Centre Handicap (1800m).
Burdekin Blues, who is prepared by premier Brisbane trainer Barry Baldwin, is favourite for Saturday's Group Two Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill, his lead-up to a tilt at the Newmarket Handicap in Melbourne.
"He's a bit immature but he battled it out well," Scriven said after Frozone got the better of King Thing by a short neck.
"I was always pretty confident. Alan Bailey doesn't bring them down here for nothing.
"And it's on to bigger and better things tomorrow."
Frozone ($3.20) edged the impeccably-bred Seventh Reason ($3.40) for favouritism and after the latter missed the start, he mustered speed but had little left at the business end of the race.
A half-brother to reigning Golden Slipper favourite More Joyous, Seventh Reason has now been to the races three times but has failed to register a win with his best result a second on debut in September.
Port Gallery finished 3-3/4 lengths behind King Thing with Seventh Reason fourth.
Trainer Guy Walter said the pace of the race early didn't suit King Thing whose stablemate Orca begins his autumn campaign at Rosehill.
Orca, who ran third in the AAMI Vase before finishing out of the placings in the Victoria Derby, runs in the Group One Club Handicap (1200m) a race Walter hopes will prove to be an omen.
"He is being aimed at the Guineas races and the AJC Australian Derby," he said.
"We decided to start him off a week early rather than run in the those set weights races.
"It gives us the option of giving him another middle distance race in his program."
Earlier on Friday, Power To Surprise built on his two minor placings from his past two starts with a comprehensive victory in the Randwick Betting Auditorium Handicap (2500m).
Power To Surprise ($2.60 fav) beat War Council by three lengths with trainer Joe Pride dreaming of big things in his future.
"This is a horse who will run two miles (3200m), maybe not this year but some time in the future," he said.
"He is a real out-and-out stayer."
