Samaready firmed further as favourite for the Golden Slipper with an ultra-impressive Sydney debut in Saturday's Group Two Reisling Stakes.
The Blue Diamond Stakes winner tightened to $2.50 with TAB Sportsbet for the $3.5 million Golden Slipper on April 7 after making a long, sustained run before drawing away to win the Reisling (1200m) by two lengths.
Her victory at Rosehill came just over an hour after top colt Pierro fought back to beat Epaulette by a short half-head in the Group Two Todman Stakes (1200m).
Samaready's winning time of 1:12.05 was slightly quicker than Pierro's 1:12.14.
Pierro holds the second line of Slipper betting at $5.50 ahead of Black Caviar's half-brother All Too Hard, who wasn't in action on Saturday, at $7.
Jockey Craig Newitt declared the Mick Price-trained filly a better horse going the Sydney direction and labelled her Reisling performance as the perfect Slipper lead-up.
"I don't think you can get a better Slipper trial than that," Newitt said.
"Pierro has had a hard run today and he's the horse that I've thought all along was the one to beat.
"I was quite happy to see he had a dogged run and we've come out with a big margin."
Samaready ($1.50 fav) settled near the tail of the field before Newitt let her stride around the field from the 600-metre mark when the speed slackened.
"I said to Mick I was just going to sit three and four deep and let her ability get her there," Newitt said.
Despite having to go wide on the turn, Samaready powered away over the final 200m to defeat Hussousa with Meidung third.
Price said the performance was "about as much as you want to see".
"If she had of run second today I would have been disappointed," Price said.
"But I've tried to allow plenty of improvement into the Slipper. She's basically done and ready now. All I have to do is probably one gallop on Tuesday week or something like that and she'll be right. She's the right filly to do it."
Patinack Farm head trainer John Thompson wasn't disappointed in Hussousa but thought jockey Blake Shinn should have made a move earlier.
"He just got outridden by Craig Newitt," Thompson said.
Gai Waterhouse is chasing her fourth Golden Slipper and Pierro's third win from as many starts shows he'll also be a force to be reckoned with on Slipper day.
"He was beaten twice today but he's an outstanding colt," Waterhouse said.
"He's everything you want in a two-year-old."
Nash Rawiller believes Pierro still has a little more to offer on the big day.
"I just think what he has done has been magic but Gai hasn't really had to tighten the screws to get him to the Slipper," he said.
"I'm hoping he will peak on the day."
