Trainer Gerald Ryan is among those calling for a review of the new whip rules - and not because he's a sore loser.

The Ryan-trained Melito finished a half head second to Deer Valley in Saturday's Group Three Silver Shadow Stakes race with winning rider Daniel Ganderton suspended as well as losing his riding fee and winning percentage.

Stewards found Ganderton guilty of breaching the recently introduced rules by hitting Deer Valley on four successive occasions near the 150m followed by a further five successive strikes closer to the post.

Ryan said he sympathised with jockeys but also said he thought he should have been able to protest the result.

"If Daniel has breached the rules and been given three penalties then we should be able to protest," Ryan said.

"We'll never know if Melito would have won the race but the other filly shouldn't have.

"If I breach the rules by getting a positive swab then I'm suspended and the horse is disqualified.

"If the jockey breaches the rules the race should be taken off them.

"It's not fair on the owners and it's going to happen a lot over the spring as we get into the big races.

"I feel for the jockeys but I think there are going to be more races lost in the final 200 metres than won."

Although he is aware a protest is not a viable option, Ryan regrets not doing it anyway just to make a point.

"I thought about it later, and I should have done it," he said.

"I think this highlights the problem with the rule.

"Who knows, Melito may have been doing her best and it may have made no difference if Corey (Brown) had hit her again.

"And it may have made no difference that Daniel did hit Deer Valley.

"But we'll never know."

Ganderton is the first Sydney metropolitan jockey to be suspended since the rules came into practice on August 1.

Although unhappy with the result, Ryan was not unhappy with Melito's performance and said she would press on to the remaining three races in the Princess Series.

The Silver Shadow was robbed of some of its glamour by the withdrawal of More Joyous due to an elevated temperature.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse said the problem was not serious and More Joyous would take her place in the Sheraco Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.
