A Sydney trip is back on the agenda for Toowoomba mudlark Rothera following the gelding's commanding win in the Listed Tattersall's Members' Cup at Eagle Farm.

Rothera, aided by a sneaky rails run from jockey Damian Browne, powered home over the top of his opposition to win the 1600-metre feature by a length over Eire Of Magic.

Lucky Luna filled the minor placing a further short neck away.

Teenaged trainer Ben Currie had planned to be in Sydney earlier for last month's Apollo Stakes and Saturday's Chipping Norton Stakes but ran out of time after the five-year-old suffered minor injuries when he finished last in the Group One Emirates Stakes at Flemington last November.

Currie, 19, was also disappointed with Rothera's two starts this campaign when the son of Tobougg finished eighth and then ninth at Eagle Farm last month.

"That's a relief," Currie said after Rothera recorded his 11th win.

"I was a bit disappointed with his recent runs and I thought he might not have come up.

"But looking back he had a few excuses and the tracks were a bit too hard for him.

"He was stepping up to the mile (1600m) today which helped a lot.

"I'm still looking at taking him to Sydney and he'll probably go down for the Ranvet."

The Group One Ranvet Stakes (2000m) will be run at Rosehill on March 19.

Browne, who has been one of Brisbane's form riders, pulled off a masterstroke when he elected to stay on the fence while his opposition skirted wide in search of firmer ground.

"I wanted to come out but with his big weight I didn't want to get held up on him," Browne said.

"He bloused through the going."

Currie burst into national prominence when he ventured to Melbourne last spring where Rothera claimed the Group Three Betfair Stakes on another heavy track at Caulfield last October.

Currie had several options pencilled in for Rothera in Sydney this autumn including the Group One Doncaster Mile at Randwick on April 16 but he feels Rothera is looking for a longer distance.

Trainer David Kelly was delighted with Eire Of Magic's effort after the eight-year-old loomed as the winner when he burst to the front halfway down the straight.

However, Kelly is unsure where to head next with Eire Of Magic who was coming off a third at Doomben last month.

Steel Lips, also a noted mudlark, was travelling easily and looked like threatening on the home turn before he compounded to finish sixth, almost four lengths from Rothera.
