Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed will have a serious gallop at Rosehill on Tuesday ahead of her first Sydney assignment in the Group One Ranvet Stakes.

The mare will be out to avenge her nose defeat by Manighar in the Australian Cup last Saturday week and trainer Leon Macdonald is confident the Sydney direction and the possibility of a rain-affected track will pose no problems.

"She has never raced on a rain-affected track but I don't care if it rains," Macdonald said.

"She has had two trials on absolute bogs and won by the length of the straight both times.

"Admittedly they were against inferior opposition but the way she did tells me it won't matter.

"She arrived in Sydney on Saturday fit and well and will gallop in the morning.

"She has a great constitution and never has her head out of the feed bin."

The Peter Moody-trained Manighar beat Southern Speed by a bob of the head in the Australian Cup but the disappointment didn't last long for Macdonald.

"She did nothing wrong, the jockey did nothing wrong, she just didn't win," he said.

"I lost a Derby by less."

The Macdonald-trained Hydrometer was beaten by Helenus in a similar finish to the 2002 Victoria Derby.

Macdonald, who trains in partnership with his son-in-law Andrew Gluyas, nominated Manighar as hard to beat again along with Chipping Norton Stakes winner Shoot Out.

"I watched Shoot Out and he looked really good," he said.

Shoot Out is one of three Chris Waller-trained horses entered for the Ranvet (2000m) with Hawk Island and Rangirangdoo rounding out the trio.

Bart Cummings has imported galloper Illo nominated along with Precedence who is making his first appearance in Sydney for two years.

Precedence finished an eye-catching fourth in the Australian Cup at Flemington while Illo weakened to run last after leading the pack early.

Last year's winner Zavite is also among the entries and comes into the race off two last placings in the Peter Young Stakes and the Canberra Cup.

He went into the 2011 Ranvet off a similar form line having beaten one runner home before causing a 100-1 upset in the Group One.
