Trainer Robbie Griffiths says Beltrois is well placed to go into next month's Group One Goodwood Handicap as a last-start Caulfield winner.

The four-year-old takes on eight other Goodwood contenders in Saturday's Pink Ribbon Cup (1200m) and Griffiths said the gelding was close to his peak.

"He is in great order and I think he is a super chance on Saturday," Griffiths said.

"He would have to be pretty close to the winner's stall to be a genuine chance in the Goodwood but I was really happy with his first-up run the other day and he's come away from that race a better horse."

Griffiths has had the 1200m Goodwood in his sights with Beltrois since the gelding finished a close second to Royal Ida in the Group Three Standish Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on New Year's Day.

He was spelled after winning the Listed Cleary Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield in January and had a conditioning run when conceding six kilos and finishing third to three-year-old sprinter Definitely Ready in the Bert Bryant Handicap (1100m) at Caulfield on April 3.

Definitely Ready ($4.40) is second favourite in Saturday's Group One Galaxy (1100m) at Randwick while Beltrois drops three kilos to 56kg at Caulfield and is TAB Sportsbet favourite at $4.40.

Griffiths has tried four times to win the Goodwood but believes that Beltrois is his best chance since Solar Antiquity finished second to Glamour Puss in 2005.

The Griffiths-trained Cocinero also ran eighth in 2007 and 13th in 2008 while stablemate Dandy Kid finished 14th in 2001.

"We have had a few cracks at it (the Goodwood) but it is a time of year when conditions can go against you," Griffiths said.

He said that Beltrois' adaptability could be the key to the stable finally winning the Adelaide feature on May 2.

"He is pretty foolproof," Griffiths said.

"He is better on the dry but handles most track conditions so he is probably our best (Goodwood) chance.

"Our best effort is a second but hopefully we can go one step better this year."

Beltrois is at $13 for the Goodwood.

Proart, who makes his debut for the Mark Kavanagh stable, looms as the biggest threat to Beltrois at Caulfield and is $5 second favourite.

Overnight Proart firmed from $21 to $18 for the Goodwood.

Formerly with the Adam Durrant stable, the Rock Of Gibraltar five-year-old has won eight races and been placed in another 10 of 29 starts for $385,400 in prizemoney.

The chestnut entire is a son of former top racemare and 1995 Caulfield Cup placegetter Beaux Art, making him a half-brother to last Saturday's AJC Carbine Club Stakes placegetter Shamardashing and Imaginaire who won the WATC St Leger and was a dual Oaks runner up in Perth and Adelaide.

Proart's best win was the Group Three AJ Scahill Stakes (1400m) when he defeated Tarzi three starts ago at Ascot on December 12.
