Group winner The Jackal is expected to relish the wide open spaces of Randwick in Saturday's Listed Razor Sharp Handicap.

Seven-year-old The Jackal comes into the 1200-metre feature after a nightmare run in the Group Three George Moore Stakes at Doomben.

The tight Queensland track has been a graveyard for The Jackal who is winless in seven starts there.

Trainer Paul St Vincent's only concern is Randwick being too wet after rain in Sydney on Friday.

But track manager Dave Hodgson expects the course to be in the dead range.

"We've had just over 11 millimetres, it's perfect out there," Hodgson said.

"The rain is forecast to stop Friday night and fine weather is predicted for race day."

St Vincent said The Jackal would not run if the track was worse than dead.

The Jackal was seventh to frontrunner Burdekin Blues in the George Moore Stakes on December 5, a day when everything that could have gone wrong did with regular jockey Robert Thompson aboard.

"He got his leg caught over the gates and Robert said the horse came out on his head, then he got squeezed up early," St Vincent said.

"Then he was tightened for room and pretty soon they were gone.

"He just doesn't like Doomben, he needs a bigger track and so here we are at Randwick.

"He'll appreciate those wide open spaces and that big straight."

The Jackal has not won at Randwick previously from three attempts but went close when a head second to The Free Stater in the Group Three Frederick Clissold (1200m) in 2007.

Two starts back The Jackal charged home from near last to finish a length sixth to Black Prince at Eagle Farm on November 21.

"Robert (Thompson) was over the moon about that run from that bad alley (17)," St Vincent said.

"I asked Robert if we needed to change anything after that last start and he said `no, everything's right'."

The Jackal was in blazing form last preparation, winning the Listed Falvelon Handicap (1200m) at Eagle Farm in late February.

Three weeks later he rocketed home to defeat Black Prince by a short neck in the Group Three Star Kingdom (1100m) at Rosehill.

The Jackal is $13 on TAB Sportsbet fixed odds while Bank Robber is the $3.40 favourite ahead of News Alert, Court and Murray's Sun who are all at $8.50.

News Alert will be ridden by in-form comeback jockey Jim Cassidy who boasts an impressive record on the Con Karakatsanis-trained galloper.

He has three wins and two placings from six starts aboard News Alert.

Cassidy celebrated a winning treble at Canterbury on Thursday night following his double at Wyong on Wednesday.

The winning run comes less than three months after he almost severed two fingers in a gardening accident.
