Leading apprentice Daniel Ganderton rates Battlefield a star of the future but first the pair will have to overcome a wide draw in the Listed Ramornie Handicap at Grafton.
Battlefield will chase his second feature race success this month after winning the Listed Ascot Handicap at Eagle Farm when he lines up in Wednesday's 1200 metre feature.
A final field of 12 has been paid up for the $130,000 sprint in which Battlefield has the second outside gate.
"He's an exciting prospect but he's drawn a bit awkwardly which is unfortunate," said trainer Paul Messara.
Battlefield has been one of the finds of the Brisbane winter carnival and is unbeaten in three starts this campaign.
His latest victory over proven performers Wasted Emotions and Mitanni prompted Ganderton to proclaim him "a Group horse and possibly a Group One horse in the spring".
Messara agrees the gelding has huge potential but believes he is poorly weighted with 55kg in the Ramornie, 2.5kg less than topweight Mr Hornblower.
"He's been running around against horses who have performed in Group races but whether he's a Group one horse I'm not sure yet," Messara said.
"I thought he got in a bit heavy at the weights for the Ramornie but obviously he's a horse on the up and he's got a change of gears."
Despite his wide draw Battlefield remains the $2.70 pre-post favourite with TAB Sportsbet ahead of News Alert ($3.50) who has barrier seven.
The latter has won three of his past four starts, highlighted by his Group Three Healy Stakes victory, and Messara believes punters will probably warm to the Con Karakatsanis-trained gelding.
"I think News Alert will probably start favourite given the pattern of the track and the barrier draw," Messara said.
Acceptances have also been declared for Thursday's Listed Grafton Cup with a field of 14 set to tackle the 2350 metre staying feature.
Caloundra Cup winner Reggie is topweight with 58kg, three kilos more than Hume and Bellagio Wynn, who finished one-two in the Tatt's Cup last start.
The remaining runners, headed by Twin Wing and Come On Cugat, are on the 53kg limit.
